Hauntingly Peaceful
Moores Creek National Battlefield | Currie, North Carolina
Rich and I went for a beautiful walk today at Moores Creek National Battlefield. The autumn colors were lovely, and there was a peacefulness about the place that was difficult to describe.
I learned that on February 27, 1776, this quiet landscape was the scene of a Revolutionary War battle. Men fought and died here, divided by their loyalties during America's struggle for independence.
Nearly 250 years later, I stand here. The path is quiet.
I turn to Rich and say, “A heavenly peace exists here, in a place where so many had suffered.”
The leaves keep falling. The light moves softly through the trees.
Two eras, bridged by time. One marked by the sounds of battle, the other by the quiet rustling of autumn leaves.
For a moment, the old noise is gone.
There is something sacred about the silence, as though those who suffered here are finally experiencing a quiet heaven.
It is hauntingly peaceful.
