High in the pine, partly hidden by leaves and branches, a great blue heron stood quietly above our backyard. I had never seen one perch there before.
I wished for my longer lens, but perhaps the distance belongs in the photograph. He was not there to pose for me. He was simply resting in a place he had chosen, allowing me only a glimpse.
For a few moments, the familiar trees became something else. Wilder, more mysterious. Then I understood why some photographs do not need to bring us closer.
Sometimes the story is in discovering what was there all along.
