I had never seen one of these before.  It is called a surprise lily, and also a hurricane lily, because it waits through the late-summer storms and then comes up on a bare stem once the rain has passed.  The ground is still littered,  but the stems do not seem to mind.  Even a hard blow can leave something bright standing.
