659
A Portrait of a Place that was met with kindness.
I Took a Chance
There was a time when 659 was more than an address.
It was where I took a chance.
I opened the door with an idea, some experience, and the hope that people would trust me enough to walk through it. They did.
And beside me was my husband.
Rich never needed his name on the sign. His presence was enough. He planted and tended the landscaping that welcomed people before they ever reached my door. And when he looked at the original wheelchair ramp, he didn't think it offered people the dignity they deserved. So he installed a Savaria wheelchair lift instead.
That was Rich. If people were going to come to me for help, he wanted them to arrive with dignity.
Over the years, people walked through that door carrying questions, worries, decisions and stories of their own. What I remember most now isn't the work.
It's the kindness.
The trust people gave me. The conversations. The relationships that grew. The familiar faces that returned.
When I look at this photograph today, I see the flowers Rich planted, the lift he insisted upon, my name on the sign, and the building where I once decided to take a chance.
I see 659.
The place where I took a chance.
And where that chance was met with kindness.
